Under the Silver Lake était en compétition officielle à Cannes, et autant dire qu’il a fait parler. Film au style assumé, il reste très étrange et mystérieux. Retour sur quelques points qui méritent des explications. Après It Follow, David Robert Mitchell était de retour à Cannes, mais cette fois en compétition officielle. Après son film d’horreur au style très apprécié et au sous texte intelligent qui lui ont valu des éloges, c’est un film au style tout aussi assumé et étrange qui prend place. Under the Silver Lake apparait comme l’ovni de la compétition, le film qui nous perd et nous transporte, bien qu’on ait un peu l’impression d’être défoncé ou apathique, tant on suit sans vraiment comprendre. En suivant Sam – joué par un très bon Andrew Garfield – qui recherche une fille qu’il devait revoir après une première rencontre et qui a subitement vidé l’appartement dans lequel elle vivait, on se retrouve à déjouer des machinations et complots d’envergure mondiale pour certains d’entre eux. Très étrange, Under The Silver Lake recèle de nombreux mystères qu’il convient d’expliquer et pose de nombreuses questions qui restent sans réponse. Les références et inspirations Surtout, la réalisation de David Robert Mitchell et sa mise en scène recèlent beaucoup d’appartenance à des styles et des réalisateurs connus, et aussi réputés pour leur gout du mystère et leur faculté à nous perdre. On peut fortement penser à Inherent Vice de Paul Thomas Anderson ou au style du film noir – le côté enquêteur loseur malgré lui comme dans Kiss Kiss Bang Bang par exemple. Mais il y a surtout deux réalisateurs dont on ressent grandement l’influence dans Under the Silver Lake David Lynch et Alfred Hitchcock. On ressent du premier une mise en scène bien particulière et une faculté à nous perdre, avec une façon de filmer Los Angeles qui fera automatiquement penser à Mulholland Drive. On retrouve dans les deux films une grande bizarrerie des situations également. Ce n’est évidemment pas aussi poussé que le maitre du genre, mais il s’agit d’une inspiration évidente. Pour le second, le sens du mystère et du polar bien senti fait ressortir des références à Vertigo ou Fenêtre sur Cour par exemple, sans oublier certains effets de mise en scène. Malgré toutes ces références, Mitchell en sort un film pourtant bien à lui, en célébrant Los Angeles comme la ville du mystère et du polar et en ajoutant une bonne grosse dose de culture geek et underground – hipster diront certain, mais on trouve que l’on en reste éloigné – Il parvient à offrir un scénario alambiqué et pas toujours clair. Ceci ne nous empêche pas d’aimer le film, mais quelques explications sont malgré tout bien venues, ce que nous allons faire dès maintenant !
